Shari Carlson grew up in a family immersed in art and music. Batik was a family process passed on from mother to daughter to daughter with each woman adding to the process. Batik refers to the layering of wax and dyes on fabric to create a picture. Carlson’s family uses the same principles, but the process has evolved over the years, with Carlson adding encaustic to the batik process.
Carlson says, “The process is meditative—focusing me on the present. Since my work includes many art forms, batiks are another way for me to share an intense feeling, experience, or story. Batik also allows me to give animals a voice. In return, they calm me and make me belly-laugh. I hope they do the same for you.” Carlson added encaustic elements, photography, and sculpture in 2011.
Carlson’s attention is captured by stunning colors, intriguing subjects, the look in an animal’s eyes, or the way it holds its body.
