SHARI CARLSON Original Fine Art Batik & Encaustic
You Work With What?
Wax.
It's so versatile. It's sticky--but hardens quickly. Gooey--but melts and sets up fast. Flexible--allows itself to be easily shaped & build out.

As a jeweler when I'm making gold rings, I carve a wax of the exact ring I want in the exact size, and then I cast it--filing and polishing the gold and setting the stones after.

When I batik, I melt wax and paint it onto silk while it's very hot to create an image. I use encaustic wax to sculpt figures, paint over photographs, emphasize details, and layer abstractly. Wax is amazing.
